Hollye B. Green and I discuss the Abraham Blue mural about to be installed on the walls of the Peoria County Courthouse (whether we like it or not). Just ten minutes of us talking over breakfast at our local Bob Evans restaurant but we are two taxpayers who are part of arts community without being beholden to the hierarchy of people who have placed themselves as ‘in charge’ of the arts.
I feel that the face of Abraham Lincoln of the walls of the Peoria County Courthouse is sending the wrong message in 2018 as Lincoln was from a time where basically only rich white people had the law working for them. The slaves were free but only free as much as (white) women were free which wasn’t a fair system obviously and let’s never forget that Native Americans were basically treated as sub-humans at that time and this all means a legacy that is not about fairness under the law – not the message for our local officials to endorse on the courthouse in my opinion.
I suggest that a mural like this painting below should adorn the Peoria County Courthouse! Screw ‘depression awareness’ – how about just sending a message of happiness! I would like my elected officials to say “Hey Peoria – it’s a beautiful day – let’s lighten up out there! Here’s some random art to show that we are people with happy lives and we will do our best so that everyone does too.”
